Digital Video Recorder (DVR)

A digital video recorder (DVR) is an electronic device, which encodes , processes and records the feed from analog cameras in to a hard drive with the date and time as per the parameters set inbuilt using the video capture hardware and the video can be searched and reviewed and used as a evidence of occurrence of an incident. The DVR has options to set the recording resolution / Type of recording/ Video Parameters / Alarm handling etc. depending on the requirement a specific DVR model can be selected by the user.

Application and usage:
DVR’s are normally preferred/used by users who are really in need of a security /surveillance system at a optimal cost meeting their requirement of recording of the video from the cameras as the configuration done. DVR’s are used in locations where doing a cabling is not a constraint. DVR’s normally supports analog cameras only but nowadays Hybrid DVR’s are available which support a combination of ANALOG and IP cameras.

IP Based Systems

Network Video Recorder systems

A Network Video Recorder (NVR) is a device used for integrating the IP cameras for recording/capturing the video data from the IP cameras into the HDD in digital form. The NVR does not have dedicated video capture hardware, instead, it gets the input from the network interface. Features / specs:
  • Operating system: Embedded OS
  • Video input: Through the network interface
  • Video output: VGA /HDMI interface for local configuration
  • Recording resolution: Ranges start from QCIF/4CIF/Megapixel

IP Cameras are cameras integrated with additional intelligence through which the video information is encoded (converted to digital form) in the camera and ready for transmission through the network interface to the SD card or external recording device. The cameras can be configured individually for various parameters like motion detection/recording/video settings/alarm settings, etc., made possible through the inbuilt firmware and the integrated network interface (features vary model to model). The IP cameras can be remotely accessed through WLAN or LAN network through a web browser/client software for live preview/configuration. These cameras come with PoE enabled or disabled depending on the model. The IP cameras are available in all common types similar to analog cameras, including IP Dome, IP C Mount, IP IR Camera, IP Speed Dome, etc.

Features / specs:

  • Imaging device: Uses CCD /CMOS sensors
  • Lens type: Fixed /Varifocal lens used based on requirement (inbuilt)

The Video Analytics software is software that analyses the video from the IP cameras in real time on the basis of the conditions /rules set for analysis and raises alerts /alarms as per the rule configuration. The Video analytics software stores the details of the analysis along with the video so that the occurrence of any incident can be traced based on the rule and any deviations of the rules can be easily identified thereby making the whole surveillance system easy and independent of continuous human monitoring without missing any critical information. Video analytics is normally integrated into the VMS or comes as separate third party software which can be linked to the VMS. Nowadays some IP cameras also comes with in-built video analytics capability.

Features:

· Identify patterns and trends enabling a quick response

· Options to set rules based on which the video is analyzed and alerts/Alarm raised
